World Heritage City - Blackpool?
It certainly is an extraordinary town - but will UNESCO get it??
Blackpool Council are applying for UNESCO World
Heritage status for the unique set of buildings and facilities that constitutes
what they say is Britain's (and hence the world's) first working-class seaside
holiday resort. Blackpool was already attracting crowds from Lancashire cotton
towns at the end of the 18th century, but really came into its own with the
Railway boom from the 1840s on. Its most famous features, the three piers, 11
km of promenade, tramway, entertainment palaces, the famous Tower, the mile
upon mile of boarding houses, were all in place by the end of that century.
Just as importantly, it's still in business!
