Solidarity Travel is a new name for an old idea - going there and finding out for yourself!
The first example we have come across, Africania, was started by a Spanish travel worker, Maria Calvo Vidal, after a period staying in Africa when she realised how powerful and useful the experience was for both sides. Africania arranges home stays in real African places with real African people, you can't imagine a more 'real' experience. And it's not expensive, either, charges only €50 to set you up an itinerary and then you deal with people direct.
They have easily worked out networks of places to stay in Senegal, Gambia and Kenya, but are interested in looking at other countries in Africa too. Take a look at their site - there are some eccentricities of language and attitude, but they're all volunteers so that's easy to understand - the possibilities are endless!
