EU seeks end of £1 flights
The hidden extras behind cheap air ticket prices will have to be published under new European Union proposals.

Airlines also face being banned for charging passengers different rates in different European countries.

The new laws could come in by autumn 2007 if approved by MEPs and national governments (see who puts the poressure on!). EU transport commissioner Jacques Barrot wants passengers to be able to compare prices like-for-like, by forcing airlines to include all charges - including airport, wheelchair, baggage fees and fuel surcharges - in the headline price. "Too often passengers are confused by apparently attractive fares which turn out to be much higher at the moment of purchase," he says.

We guess you’re all grownup enough to know there’s a whole lot of other charges to pay when you look at a flight on Easyjet, Ryanair, or the hopeful pack running after – but some budget airlines over-stress the amount they actually have to pay in taxes and charges, and, anyway, if it makes air travel look that little bit more expensive to the more naïve, well that’s no bad thing...
