Disney’s Magic Kingdom
With the successful launch of a new theme park in Hong Kong it seems
that Disney has worked its magic once again, for the latest trick even
includes disappearing dolphins. That’ll give the kids something to look
forward to…
Disneyland’s latest holiday home is situated in Penny’s Bay, or more accurately, directly on top of it, in northeast Lantau, an outlying island often described as Hong Kong’s ‘big green lung’. Once a sanctuary for walkers who came to hike Lantau’s peaks, Penny’s Bay has been reclaimed by 84 million cubic metres of landfill in order to create Disney’s magical kingdom.
Part of the coastline to the north is now being reclaimed for a six-lane highway and there’s even talk of building a bridge to Mainland China. All this despite warnings from Dolphinwatch that “time is running out for the pink dolphins”.
So named for their rose-coloured hue, thought to be caused by ‘blushing’, Indo-Pacific Humpbacks and Sousa Chinensis - pinker than the Boto dolphins in the Amazon - are among the rare varieties sighted here. However, numbers have significantly declined since the Chek Lap Kok Airport was built and the Pearl River Delta region succumbed to relentless development.
As a representative of Dolphinwatch so eloquently noted: “The government should be investing in natural resources, not using precious green space for theme parks.” I know which one would give me the biggest thrill…
