Born Free or Duty Free?
Pick up a souvenir in South Africa and you could have blood on your hands.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has warned that many wild animals now face extinction due to relentless poaching. Each year Her Majesty's Customs and Excise seize thousands of illegal tourist trinkets made from endangered species. Sadly, such souveniers are all too prevalent in countries like South Africa and as long as there are wealthy tourists willing to spend their holiday currency on these goods, wild animals will continue to be killed in order to satisfy demand.
IFAW is calling on all holidaymakers, business travellers and backpackers to support its Think Twice campaign, which aims to raise awareness and boycott any souvenirs made from the bones, ivory and skins and shells of rare animals.
