I once read somewhere that you can keep a bottle of water cool in a hot climate by putting it in a wet sock. Has anyone actually tried this? Does it work?

the wet sock cooler
my thermodynamics instinsts tells me that as the water in the wet sock is heated up it wants to evaporate, and for a liquid to change state to a gas, it requires a relatively large amount of energy (compared to just heating). Thus the evaporating sock water 'absorbs' some energy from the water in the bottle as it changes state and the temperature of the bottle watter drops.

The wet sock cooler

hi steph, I think it has something to do with the sock drying before the water heats up. Less heat gets to the bottled water as the water in the sock takes a while to evaporate. I cant see cheesy feet flavoured water catching on tho!! uummm yummy!!!
